Our history

Our origins

We can be traced back to the mid-19th century when Victorian engineers began to supply water directly to people's homes.

1862

The Caterham Spring Water Company was founded, supplying water to Caterham, Coulsdon, Warlingham, Godstone, Bletchingley, Nutfield, Reigate, Redhill and Earlswood

1863

The Sutton and Cheam Water Company began to supply water to the parish of Sutton

1885

The Caterham Spring Water Company merged with the Kenley Water Company, creating the East Surrey Water Company

1950s

East Surrey Water Company merges with Dorking Water Company

1960s

Exhibition celebrating 100 years – The Company has over 200 employees – one third have worked for the Company for more than 20 years

1970s 

Modernisation – new main computer and radio telephone equipment installed at head offices

1980s 

Company support for WaterAid begins

1990s

Bough Beech Education Centre opened by Alan Meale MP

1996

Sutton District Water merged with East Surrey Water to form Sutton and East Surrey Water

2000s

New head office opens in Redhill

2010s

Major upgrade completed at Bough Beech Treatment Works to increase capacity

2017

Rebranded to SES Water

2021

First UK water company to roll out intelligent technology across entire water network to help detect leakage
