A former primary school teacher who now educates young people about water has been recognised in the prestigious Women in Utilities Awards 2026 for inspiring the next generation to value and protect water.
After spending 28 years in the classroom, Lisa Downes joined SES Water in 2023 as Education Coordinator and now leads the education programme at Flow Zone Education Centre at Bough Beech Reservoir.
In her role, Lisa leads education sessions for schools and community groups, welcoming thousands of visitors to the area each year.
Through interactive lessons, reservoir walks, tunnel tours and treatment works visits, Lisa helps bring the journey of water to life for young people.
Lisa has been shortlisted for the Community Outreach Award at the awards for her work on the Education and Community Outreach Programme which has reached more than 6,200 pupils last year alone, delivering 188 lessons across 128 schools on topics including climate change, plastic pollution and the journey of water.
The shortlisting recognises Lisa’s contribution to inspiring the next generation to better understand water, wastewater and environmental protection.
Organised by Utility Week in partnership with the Women’s Utility Network, the awards celebrate individuals making a positive impact across the UK utilities sector through leadership, innovation and service.
Speaking about the shortlisting, Lisa said: “It feels fantastic to have been shortlisted for the Women in Utilities Community Outreach Award. Having the opportunity to help children understand the true value of water, encourage them to learn the importance of sustainable water use and inspire them to pursue STEM careers is a privilege.
“I am very grateful for being nominated – it has made me feel very much valued and appreciated for what I contribute every day."
The winners of the Women in Utilities Awards 2026 will be announced on Friday 3 July at a special ceremony at City Central at the HAC in London.
