Save water, save money

Saving water

In summer, we tend to use more water – mainly for watering the garden. This can increase your water bill (if you’re on a meter). If you use more heated water, this will also add to energy bills.

  1. Go for a quick shower – a full bath uses up to 100 litres of water, whereas a four-minute shower uses around 24. Across the year, this could save you £££ on water and energy bills. See our water-saving tips page for more ideas.
  2. Turn off the tap when brushing - save litres of water by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth. Children often forget, so help them build the habit and explain why it matters.
  3. Water plants the smart way - seedlings and young plants need to be watered regularly, but mature plants can often go five days or more without a top-up. Water early in the morning or late evening to reduce evaporation—and skip unnecessary watering to avoid shallow roots and wasted water.
  4. Fix your leaky loo - Dual-flush toilets often develop tiny leaks against the back of the pan. It might not look like much water, but it really adds up over time. See our water-saving in the home page for common reasons why your loo might leak.
